UN HCR Greetings

President

Dear delegates!
It’s my honor to welcome you at Pyatigorsk International Model United Nations 2021 as the President of High Commissioner for refugees.
It is known that the United Nations was formed because leaders across the world knew that they could only deliver security and peace for their citizens at home if they could cooperate as a community of nations. Providing security and stability worldwide is what we, as a community, are supposed to do together.
Our agenda is aimed at establishing proper living conditions for refugees in post-conflict areas. It requires a deep understanding of the issue and a lot of work to be done and I hope together the member-states will have a fruitful discussion in the framework of our Charter, being fully committed to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
On behalf of the HCR Presidium, I encourage you to use the opportunity of becoming a part of this huge international modelists family, become a diplomat for at least five days and face one of the most important issues nowadays. Enjoy the chance to meet like-minded people and decide the future of the world.
See you in the mountains of Pyatigorsk!

Yours sincerely,
HCR President,
Ani Markosyan

Vice-President

Dear delegates,

It is an honour for me to welcome you in the English committee of this year’s Pyatigorsk Model United Nations. As the vice-president of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and on behalf of my colleagues at the Secretariat, we will be looking forward to working with you!

The importance of our agenda is no secret to all member states of the United Nations. Countries have one way or another participated in refugee crises. Millions of people have had to flee their homes in order to seek, first and foremost, safety. This is why, when discussing our committee’s agenda it is mandatory to consider the safe return of citizens to their homes. An effective resolution should tackle short and long-term solutions, such as resettlement and local integration, and other instruments to successfully maximize social, democratic, and economic stabilisation of peoples lives and their countries.

Being fortunate enough to discuss and attempt to solve such a crisis, we need to keep in mind that this is a reality for millions of people, whose lives are at stake. Being considerate and thoughtful of our words and actions will lead us to have fruitful debates in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees at the 5th Pyatigorsk Model United Nations.

Wishing you the best of luck!

With kind regards,
Vice-president of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
Ekaterina Smyslenova

Expert

Dear Delegates!

It is my honor to welcome you to PIMUN 2021 on behalf of the Expert of UNHCR. My name is Valeria Pronina, I am a third-year student at the International Relations School of St. Petersburg State University. PIMUN 2021 will be the tenth simulation for me as a participant and the third one as an expert.

The plight of refugees is is a profound challenge, which, alas, is becoming increasingly acute nowadays in the context of permanent regional conflicts in all parts of the globe. Though the UN is taking efforts to alleviate the plight of refugees, progress is far too slow. That is why this year we face a great challenge to find the viable tools for combating this problem.

Wish you interesting and fruitful work! I am confident that I will enjoy and learn from your debates!

See you!

Expert of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
